About: St. Georg Church

Urmia County, the capital of West Azerbaijan Province, has an ancient history and culture, and the signs of human settlement from a remote past are observable in it. Pleasant environmental and climate conditions in the plains of this province have turned this area into an interesting place. Therefore, different tribes either passed through or settled in this area in the past. Among those tribes, Armenians have been present in Urmia since then. There are 40 historical churches in Urmia County and its surrounding villages, which confirm the presence of Armenians in this area. St. George Church in Gardabad Village is one of those churches; According to Italian experts, the church was built in 17th century AD. This church is one of the valuable memorials of migrating Armenians in Urmia County in Safavid era. Unfortunately, there is not much information about its historical background.
Gardabad Village is located in the roadside in a plain with a mild semi-arid climate. قودوق بوغان river runs through south of the village. In this village, about 86 families from different tribes including Azeri, Assyrian, Armenian, and Kurdish (from the skeptic tribe) tribes inhabit and often do animal husbandry and gardening.
